Overview

***Hours for this position are Monday - Friday, 6:30a.m. - 3:00p.m.***

 

The Clinical Interpreter is responsible for providing interpretation between UAMS staff and Spanish-speaking UAMS patients/families while in the hospital, clinics, or procedural areas and communicates with patients/families to determine if concerns have been addressed/resolved. The Interpreter provides written translation of material, including patient education material and legal/medical consents for treatment, admission, discharge, etc. This individual fosters patient- and family-centered care and works in respectful, supportive, and collaborative ways with patients, families, and staff. The Interpreter serves as an advocate to enhance and facilitate effective communication in a patient- and family-centered manner to augment the care process.

Responsibilities

Provides specified language interpretation for the patient/family along with the medical health care teams and assists staff in connecting with the language line for other interpretations

  • Act as a conduit which renders in one language accurately what is being said in the other language, with no admissions, omissions, editing or polishing;
  • Facilitate patient/family understanding by clarifying and adjusting for special vocabulary and level of formality established by the patient/family, explaining or making work pictures of terms that have no linguistic equivalent (or whose linguistic equivalent will not be understood by the patient) and checking for understanding;
  • Provide the necessary cultural framework for understanding the message being interpreted to reduce or eliminate misunderstandings between the patient and health care team;
  • Identify barriers or concerns that interfere with the interpreting process and suggest alternatives for resolution;
  • Consult with the medical professional to determine the goals for the interpretation and maintain contact with the health care team to discuss any needs or further issues stemming from the encounter;
  • Be responsible for translating and producing cultural/linguistic appropriate patient and staff education materials;
  • Document patient encounters and services according to department protocol in making notations in the patient's chart, indicating the origin of the request for interpretation or translation, the nature of the service provided and an assessment of the patient's understanding and level of acceptance of the information; and educate staff on accessing interpretation services and monitoring utilization of these services.

Guest Relations/Communication

  • Demonstrate effective communication skills and maintain good working relationships with patients and families, visitors, physicians and other employees;
  • Conduct in-services and consultations relating to medical interpretation/translation, health cultural practice or pertinent issues with medical/health care staff personnel and appropriate hospital departments and committees;
  • Follow hospital guest relations guidelines;
  • Interact with patient/families/care partners using age appropriate communication skills;
  • Make a conscious effort to recognize and support co-workers, working as a team player. 

Professional Development/Service/Education

  • Maintain knowledge-base of medical terminology, community resources, patient- and family-centered care practices, hospital policies, TJC requirements;
  • Successfully complete annual competency test and any additional competency testing required to validate required skills;
  • Submit suggestions and conduct focused education or in-services;
  • Be current on department certification requirements;
  • Demonstrate a professional appearance and demeanor, adhering to the hospital and department dress code and code of conduct;
  • Cooperate in maintaining quality of service by being flexible in providing coverage during vacation, sick leave, and emergencies as requested;
  • Enroll in 40 hour medical interpreter educational program, and successfully complete program within 90 day probation period of hiring;
  • Must enroll in and successfully pass the written and oral testing for National Certification within two years of hire.

Quality/Emergency/Safety Procedures and Resource Utilization  

  • Be knowledgeable of individual service responsibilities during emergency and disaster procedures;
  • Complete all annual training/education/health requirement as determined by UAMS and The Joint Commission;
  • Utilize hospital resources appropriately, always mindful of ways to decrease costs and increase reimbursements;
  • Submit ideas and/or problems to manager outlining possible changes or potential barriers to work flow processes for process improvement initiatives;
  • Demonstrate working knowledge of HIPAA laws and application in medical interpreting profession;
  •  Assist in producing and monitoring daily reports to ensure employee productivity.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or High School diploma/GED plus 4 years’ formal experience in professional medical interpreting
  • Must be able to pass language proficiency tests administered through UAMS and outside testing agency during interview process. 
  • After hire and within 90 days of hire, must complete and pass 40 hour interpreting class.
  • Must obtain National Board Certification for Medical Interpreters (NBCMI) within 2 years of hire.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

  • Must be fluent in Spanish and English, with aptitude to pass proficiency testing;
  • Proficiently interpret and translate from English to Spanish – Spanish to English;
  • Efficient in basic computer skills (Word and Outlook);
  • Understand and recognize legal and liability considerations of maintaining confidentiality and addressing situations of necessary information disclosure - including confidentiality and mandated reporting information;
  • Understand the difference between true and false cognates (words in different languages that are or appear to be related in meaning) and utilize proper positioning, gaze, and intervention strategies;
  • Ability to translate materials such as informed consent, discharge instructions and medications instructions stated and explained by health care providers and ability to effectively manage the flow of the communication;
  • Ability to adjust communications to fit the needs and level of understanding of the receiver;
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure and apply sound judgment;
  • Ability to work well with individuals at all levels of the organization; and
  • Knowledge of cultural and perceptual factors that may affect patient treatment and communication.

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • National certification as a medical/health care interpreter and/or completion of 40 hour medical interpreter educational program preferred
  • Knowledgeable in medical terminology in both Spanish and English
  • CLAS regulations and applicability
  • Electronic Medical Record / EPIC experience.
