The Arts & Science Center for Southeast Arkansas, an American Alliance of Museums accredited, award-winning museum, seeks a Gallery Assistant for the Windgate Community Gallery located in our new facility, The ARTSpace on Main.

Since 1968 the Arts & Science Center (ASC) has provided high-caliber arts programming for the community of Pine Bluff and Southeast Arkansas. Our 22,000- square-foot museum features four galleries, 232-seat theater, and a teaching studio. ASC is currently undergoing an expansion of our campus and programming through our new ARTx3 community engagement initiative. Our ARTx3 campus expansion includes two renovated historic buildings next to the museum: The ARTSpace on Main, a multi- use arts/events space, and ART WORKS on Main, mixed-use space featuring a black box theatre and five artist live/work apartments and studios. The ARTx3 initiative aims to empower our community through the arts, support the revitalization of Downtown Pine Bluff, bolster the creative economy, and bring positive attention to our city.

Position Description

The ARTSpace (ASOM) Gallery Assistant assists with the day-to-day operation of the Windgate Community Gallery featuring artwork for sale by local and statewide artists. The ASOM Gallery Assistant is an hourly, part-time staff working a minimum of 20 hours to a maximum of 28 hours a week with the opportunity for growth and transition to a full-time position.

Primary Responsibilities/Essential Functions

  • Provide excellent customer service for artists and visitors

  • Assist with executing artists/artwork contracts; adhering to contract specifics and deadlines

  • Efficiently and professionally communicate with featured artists about contracts and artwork sales

  • Handle the sale of artwork and merchandise; accurately document purchases

  • Assist with overseeing the gallery’s display design of artwork and merchandise

  • Maintain the appearance of the gallery space and artwork and merchandise for sale

  • Collaborate with the Communications + Development Coordinator to develop content and plans for advertisements, press coverage, web content, and other promotional materials in a timely manner

  • Professionally and courteously handle inquiries via telephone and email

  • Provide support to the ASOM Public Program Coordinator and relevant staff with gallery and museum events and activities.

  • Interact with the public as an advocate for the arts and the ARTx3 project.

  • Be able to work a flexible schedule including evenings and Saturdays

  • Other duties assigned

Education & Experience

The ideal candidate will have an undergraduate degree, academic training, and/or work experience in arts administration, art history, design and merchandising, business and marketing. Minimum two years of experience in related field or combination of customer services, retail, administration, and publicity. Proficient in Microsoft Office/Adobe Cloud applications and social media platforms. Strong written and oral communication skills; effective problem solving, flexibility, and a sense of humor. Possess the ability to forge and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of individuals. Must be a self-starter and show attention to detail; possess excellent organizational skills, work accurately and efficiently. This position must be flexible and able to work independently, collaboratively, and effectively in a fast-paced, creative environment.

Special Requirements & Compensation

This year round, part-time position requires a flexible schedule to accommodate special events, and after-hours work including weekend and evening hours. The incumbent should have a valid driver’s license, be able to lift items up to 30 pounds, climb a ladder, handle a sales register, and travel to collect artwork if necessary. Hourly wage range $14-$16, depending on experience. Position open until filled. No phone calls please.
